June 18 (Bloomberg) -- As the Supreme Court nears the endof its term, the big decisions we are still waiting for concernrace and marriage. These decisions offer the court anopportunity to exercise an unwonted self-restraint.

In two cases, the court is judging how far governments maygo to rectify past discrimination against blacks and fosterracial diversity. In two other cases, the court is askingwhether governments are unconstitutionally discriminatingagainst gays and lesbians by treating marriage as the union of aman and a woman.
