“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” retained the top spot in U.S. cinemas against four new wide releases in the final weekend of a year that produced the lowest sales since 2011.

“The Battle of the Five Armies,” the last in a J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy, produced $41.4 million in the U.S. and Canada for Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., Rentrak Corp. said in a statement yesterday. With three days left, sales so far in 2014 have declined 5.2 percent to $10.22 billion -- the lowest since $10.19 billion in the same period of 2011, the industry researcher said.
