With an April 29 deadline for extending peace talks nearing, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held fast to his demands that Israel release Palestinian prisoners as promised and freeze construction on lands his people want for a future state.

As nearly nine months of U.S.-brokered negotiations verge on collapse, Abbas has been talking about disbanding the Palestinian Authority, the limited self-rule government established under the 1993 peace accords with Israel, Palestinian officials have said in recent days. He’s also renewed efforts to reconcile with the Gaza Strip’s Hamas rulers, a move Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned.
