India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to win one of two state elections while nearing majority in the other, as exit polls signaled a verdict that would boost Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ability to carry forward legislative reforms.
The BJP will wrest power from the Congress party in Haryana, while emerging as the single largest party in Maharashtra, India’s second-most populous state and home to its financial capital Mumbai, according to exit polls released yesterday. Results will be known Oct. 19.
