Ross Ulbricht, the alleged mastermind of the $1.2 billion online “black-market bazaar” known as Silk Road, must confront claims that he tried to arrange the murders of at least six people, the judge overseeing his trial ruled.

Federal prosecutors want to present evidence at Ulbricht’s drug-trafficking trial next month of alleged murder-for-hire plots, as proof of the extreme steps he took to protect an online drug-distribution network. U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest today said the government may do so, even though Ulbricht isn’t accused in the case of attempted murder.
