Those V-Shaped Stock Charts Are Still Being Dissected

The jagged V-shaped chart of the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index and many individual stocks in the past six weeks caused Carter Worth to search for the right word to describe the whiplash.

One word that the chief market technician at Sterne Agee & Leach Inc. settled on was not a word at all but a comic book-style swear: “?%$!!!” And while that may be the best word to describe it, it’s lost on clients who didn’t read a lot of Mad Magazine growing up. So the word he settled on was “impetuous,” an adjective defined by Merriam-Webster as “acting or done quickly and without thought.”
