Got a big day at work? Exercise can strengthen your brainpower and bolster your emotional fortitude, says Panteleimon Ekkekakis, a professor of exercise psychology at Iowa State University, who studies how working out affects the mind and mood.

Although any type of exercise can improve health, cardio triggers optimal cognitive and emotional states, Ekkekakis says. Other pursuits such as yoga and weightlifting, for example, seem promising but haven’t been as thoroughly researched.
