Saudi Arabia expects to start its first solar-powered sea water desalination plant by 2013, Mohammed Alsuwaiyel, president of King Abdullah City for Science and Technology, told a conference today.

The plant in al-Khafji, near the Saudi border with Kuwait, will be the world’s largest of its kind, Alsuwaiyel said in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. The plant will produce 30,000 cubic meters of water for 100,000 people living in al-Khafji, according to KACST.
