Egypt’s army said ceding power now would mean abandoning the country and urged activists to switch focus to next week’s election as protesters demanding the generals step down continued to rally in Tahrir Square for almost a week.

Holding power is a “curse, not a blessing,” yet most Egyptians retain “absolute confidence” in the army, Mukhtar El Moula, a member of the ruling military council, said at a press conference in Cairo today. “It’s in Egypt’s best interests for elections to be held,” he said. “The judges are ready and security is ready. The Egyptians must be ready and take part of the responsibility and go out and vote.”
