Burundian authorities have detained at least 21 people in a security crackdown following frequent gunfire in the capital and the assassination of a close ally of the president, human rights campaigners said.

The suspects were arrested and taken to undisclosed locations as police conducted mostly night-time searches in Bujumbura since Sunday, said Anchaire Nikoyagize, president of Ligue Iteka, a group that deploys observers throughout the East African nation checking for human rights abuses. General Adolphe Nshimirimana was murdered Aug. 2 by unidentified gunmen.
