Even including months of virus-related slowdowns, cumulative electricity demand so far this year in the regions including China’s manufacturing heartland has risen above 2019 for the first time.

China Southern Power Grid Co. had dispatched 488.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity as of June 20, more than for the same period in 2019 for the first time this year, the company said in a statement on Sunday. The grid covers five southern provinces including China’s largest, Guangdong, whose gross domestic product last year exceeded that of Australia.
