Hong Kong invoked emergency rule for the first time in a half a century to ban face masks on protesters, Now TV reported, as authorities look to quell months of unrest.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the city’s cabinet approved the measure on Friday effective from midnight, Now TV reported, citing people it didn’t identify. The government announced that Lam would hold a media briefing at 3 p.m. along with eight ministers including Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung, Financial Secretary Paul Chan, Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng and Secretary for Security John Lee.
